Chenille patches are a timeless and versatile option, known for their soft, plush texture. These patches are crafted using a special technique of looping yarns over a base fabric, creating a raised, carpet-like surface that exudes a luxurious and tactile feel.

The production process involves stitching chenille yarn onto a durable backing using specialised equipment, resulting in long-lasting and visually striking patches. Chenille patches are commonly seen on school apparel, sports uniforms, and band jackets. While chenille is perfect for creating bold, standout designs, it differs significantly from other patch types like embroidery or PVC patches.

Unlike the intricate detailing of embroidered patches or the weatherproof properties of PVC, chenille patches prioritise texture and warmth, making them ideal for statement pieces rather than fine detailing or outdoor use.

Application process

Different types of backing requires different application processes.

Iron-on custom chenille patches come with a heat-activated adhesive backing. To apply them, start with preheating your iron to the appropriate temperature setting recommended by the manufacturer. Ensure you cover the patch with a thin cloth to protect the patch and fabric from direct heat before pressing the iron firmly for about 20 seconds. Let it cool for a minute or so and then peel off the protective covering from the patch.

Sew-on custom chenille patches do not have adhesive and require sewing for attachment. Position the patch and insert a needle from the backside of the fabric, bringing it up. Then, stitch around the edges using a whipstitch or running stitch. Repeat this until the patches are secured. Finally, knot the thread on the backside of the fabric and trim any excess thread.

Stick-on custom chenille patches often have an adhesive backing for temporary attachment. Just peel off the protective backing and press the adhesive side firmly onto the fabric. You may remove and reposition it as needed.

Chenille patches with Velcro backing offer a versatile option for attachment. Attach the hook side of the Velcro backing to the fabric in the desired position, then attach the loop side of the Velcro backing to the patch. Press the patch with the loop side onto the fabric with the hook side, creating a secure attachment.
